Denmark: The 1998 Under-23 World Championship
A strong Belgium team are headed by reigning World champion Sven Nys and Bart Wellens and a historic era is beginning. The following year Mario De Clerq won Belgium's first senior World title for four seasons and the country's current phase of cyclocross dominance had well and truly begun. The strength of Belgian 'cross was such that Nys had to wait until 2005 to win the first of his two elite titles. Enjoy a young Sven Nys showing why he has stayed at the top of the sport for so long.
Ireland: The Guinness Series from 1986
The Guinness series in Phoenix Park, Dublin shows just how courses and technology have changed in the last 30 years. Frosty conditions make for tricky bike handling. Unfortunately the footage ends before the race finish.
Belgium: The 1st GP Erik De Vlaeminck at Zolder in 2003
Back in 2003 Belgium tested the water with a Summer 'cross with the aim of impressing the International Olympic Committee with the sport of cyclocross. With temperatures in Zolder reaching 35 degrees the Summer Olympics ambitions lasted just two seasons though. World champion Bart Wellens, Belgian champion Sven Nys, Mario De Clerq and Ben Berden are in the mix as riders are sprayed with water rather than their bikes. Mountain biking had debuted at the 1996 Summer Olympics.
